Jennifer A. Reis, teaching artist and assistant professor at Morehead State University, will host an embellished textile weekend workshop at the Winchester Opera House on Saturday, February 27th – Sunday, February 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Winchester, Kentucky.  The cost of the afternoon workshop is $75, and includes lunch both days and all supplies to make an embellished textile sampler using sewing, quilting, embroidery and embellishing techniques, and a larger original textile artwork. A signed copy of Creative Quilting with Beads, featuring the art of Ms. Reis is available for an additional charge of $25.

Workshop Details

Textile artist Jennifer Reis will lead a weekend workshop guiding students through basic and advanced hand-worked art quilting techniques as they create an embellished textile assemblage, learning non-traditional methods of quilting, appliqué, embroidery, and embellishing. Using techniques like raw appliqué, embroidery thread hand quilting and text application, embellishing with shi-sha mirrors, beads and found objects, students will create an embellished textile sampler as well as a more complex textile artwork.All techniques are hand-worked, emphasizing non-traditional sewing and quilting, and is open to sewing novices and experts alike. Participants also have an opportunity to create unique shrink art embellishments. Reis will refer to her artwork throughout the workshop, as well as present resources regarding fine and folk art inspirations as well as historical and contemporary textile materials.In closing, students will investigate professional presentation of their completed artworks. All supplies will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring personally-preferred fabric, thread/embroidery floss, beads, and found objects to incorporate into their piece.
