When it rains . . .

Photo of garden in KY humidity, bee pasture in background

After some dead time, seems like everything is happening at once.  All three of my pieces were accepted for Cream of the Crop at the Southern Ohio Museum, work is up in Winchester and @ Miami U, and now it’s time to pack up stuff for Boston.  Oh, and there’s that little trip I’m taking [...]

MSU Summer Arts Academy wrapping up

SAA Textile Artwork

Today’s the last day of the MSU Summer Arts Academy, and we’ve had a fun and productive time with the seven high school students from across Kentucky that have worked in the areas of photography, mixed media & shaped paintings, digital art and textiles.  Guess which one I was in charge of . . . [...]

Textile intersession class @ MSU

Abby Brading

Well, the textile intersession class at Morehead State University just wrapped up.   It was one of the most pleasant teaching experiences I’ve ever had – the class was held @ MSU’s Center for Regional Engagement, housed in a 1940s cape cod house with a very cozy rec room in the basement.  Here’s some examples of [...]

Bad for You!

Lynda Barry and me with the BAD FOR YOU cupcakes

Lynda Barry came to MSU in late April to do lectures/seminars/workshops/demos, and she was the best visiting artist I’ve brought in over the ten years of arts programming work.   Lynda loves Kentucky and we love Lynda!

Nashville!

SEC in Nashville

Pete and I went to Nashville over Spring Break and had a riot.  Here’s what we got into. First mistake: thinking I could actually leave the BLUEgrass.  It was the SEC final game with UK.  You can take the girl out of Kentucky . . . I did some research with friends and the Internets, [...]

It’s the most wonderful time of the year …

view from the magpie's nest

March and April are totally crazy at my job as gallery director/college professor, so I like to imagine myself skipping down the hallway singing that.  It’s only a dream at this point. The Winchester workshop was a smashing success! Photos below . . . The room set up by the very attentive Miss Brett Martin, [...]

A word of caution . . .

Don’t use an iron on laminates you tried to make at Kinko’s that still had big air bubbles – not a brilliant idea to think that squashing a bunch of heat on the plastic sheet will magically make adhesion happen!  Some of the harpy chickens (see previous post) look a little like potato chips – [...]

Attack of the sequin rosettes . . . Warrior Shoot finished . . . FINALLY!

Warrior Shoot, 2010 (Embellished Textile Assemblage with Rosettes)

Bad news: the “snowpocalypse” of 2010 barred travel to Ohio this Saturday for the Mardi Gras Mask workshop (and much needed thrift shop therapy).  Good news: “Warrior Shoot” is now finished (and see below, photographed!), had more experimenting time with the revered Diamond Glaze, and braved the Sunday hoards at the M’Head Goodwill to score [...]

Me @ Art from the Heartland Exh @ Indy Art Center

This weekend, Pete and I took off to the midwest, possible snowstorm be damned, to go to the Art from the Heartland exhibition opening reception at the Indianapolis Art Center.  Great event, beautiful Michael Graves building, fantastic artwork.   Rare as it is that I leave the hills to actually go to an exhibition in [...]
